When I first meet my students, I ask them to write an essay for me. Usually the topic will be something like “Describe a place you would recommend to someone visiting your country for the first time." I love this topic, as it is simple to write about since we all know our countries very well, and would love to write about it. Secretly, I also love to get some free traveling tips! :)
When I review their essays, I can see that they have tried to get their grammar right, used good vocabulary, etc.
BUT they overlooked one important thing on their essay and i.e. the ORGANIZATION.
Don’t get me wrong, grammar and vocabulary are important parts of the TOEFL, but organization is just as important and actually makes writing much easier.
Let me explain.
Imagine that you are reading an article where there are no paragraphs and no sequence in thoughts. You start wondering where is this going, when will it end, what are they even talking about?!
Now imagine another article where you see multiple paragraphs and each paragraph has a purpose.
ORGANIZATION of both your independent and integrated essay is extremely important to score high on the Writing section of the TOEFL. I will share THREE THINGS you can do RIGHT NOW to improve your TOEFL essays –
- Introduction: Start your essay with a clear introduction, clearly stating what will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
- Body paragraph: This is where you will provide reasons and examples to support your essay. Each paragraph should support each reason that you provide.
- Conclusion: Always end your essay with a clear and concise conclusion.
Implement this strategy on your TOEFL Writing Section and you will be sure to see an increase in your score.
